My current favorite Final Fantasy Fourteen conspiracy theory, that I'm so upset that I didn't make up myself, is that the Eleventh Reflection is just the setting for Final Fantasy Eleven

I honestly think that many people don't know what their public libraries offer besides books. I think that everyone should go on a public library treasure hunt in 2026. Go explore what your library systems offer at no cost to you. Report back to me :)
“I miss blockbuster video” the library has every dvd totally untouched and I never see you there

I HATE e-begging, especially during the holidays, but all I want for Christmas is to help pay off my disabled mother's medical bills so she can continue to get the care that she needs. Any donations or sharing is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

A friend and I discovered though our conversation that the last base Shadowbringers dungeon is a Mogtome duty this time, and that's so objectively funny to me.

FYI looks like GoFundMe is doing a new round of identity verifications for people in Gaza- so it is showing for many as their payouts are paused. Their campaign organizers should have an email about what they need to do next- it looks routine and not targeted- but they do need to respond

If I post that same image of my dog and a toy on a review of the toy, the alt text will be primarily about the toy as it appears in the image.

If I post that image on a "show your dog's coat pattern" forum or thread, the alt text will focus on describing my dog's coat pattern in the image.
"Alt text is contextual" means if I post a photo of my dog with a toy on a thread or forum about digital photo editing, my alt text is going to very briefly skim over the details of my dog and the toy and I'm going to describe other qualities of the image, like background blur, sharpness, tint, etc.

nb. AI alt text is not the answer here. Alt text needs to be done by humans because "AI" doesn't know why you're sharing that image where you're sharing it. And context is the most important thing to decide what you put in alt text and what you don't.

Another thread:
People stress me out with how much they misunderstand "alt text is contextual".

It doesn't mean you put the context of the image in the alt text. It doesn't mean you skimp on the alt text, either.

It means the alt text is going to change depending on where and why you post the image.
The main point of alt text is to say what the point of the image is in context. So that someone who can see it will get the same meaning as someone who is relying on a screen reader for alt text.

And because of that, where you're sharing the image will very probably change what you say it means.

Maybe most importantly, from both my own experiences and what I've observed, understanding how to do alt text properly and what to include and what to leave out makes it easier and takes off a lot of the pressure.

And because alt text is a thing that needs to be done by humans, this matters.

A lot of folks think when I talk about doing alt text properly, it's about my opinion.

It (mostly) isn't. This is a tool that has decades of development to get it to a place where it's useful for what it's supposed to do.

We should care about using it properly.

And even though (at least right now) most social media platforms don't give us the option to include title text or other forms of supplemental information in their own spaces, it's still not appropriate to put that kind of information in alt text on social media.

This is a thread about that:
So, I've pointed out many, many times that best practice for alt text on traditional websites doesn't always transfer exactly to social media.

But to the extent it does, we should absolutely be trying to stick to that best practice on social media.

And because that is not what alt text is for, there was an attribute that supported that kind of description. For a little while.

It was called "longdesc". And it is no longer an option for use.

It wasn't implemented or supported so it was deprecated.
One thing that comes up as a problem for people doing alt text is they think they need to describe every single detail in the image and that's a hugely overwhelming prospect. And also almost never the point of alt text.

But some people genuinely could benefit from that.

Anyway, a lot of people basically have wrong or incomplete ideas about how to do alt text.

And I spent years paying attention to what folks (including me) were having trouble with when it comes to alt text on social media which is why I wrote some guides about it.
If you're seeing encouragement/demands to do alt text and you're overwhelmed or confused about how to do it and you're worried you're going to do it wrong...

this thread is for you.

First: prompt questions to get you started.
Alt text prompt Qs:

What would someone who can't see the image need to know about it in order to take part in the conversation? What is it about this image that made you choose it? What are the important details someone who could see the image would take away from it?

(Not for images of text.)

And here we get back to the title attribute.

Partly because of how Twitter surfaced alt text, a lot of people were under the impression that title text and alt text are the same thing with the same purpose. They aren't.

Remember this? The third paragraph is important.
This is the thing from the WHATWG HTML standard I am referring to.

Folks often talk about alt text having a curb cut effect, but it's more of a reverse curb cut effect and later an actual curb cut effect.

Alt is an HTML attribute that is only and specifically for text that serves as a replacement to the image. This also makes it helpful to screen reader users.
