Any economically successful countries needs a "underclass" that is exploitable. The US does it with working poor and little to no labour laws. Then takes money from blue states, and gives it to the red states for starvation protection. While the red states give the tax dollars to business.
It is shocking to learn how many people, families, workers in the US rely on help to feed themselves. There is something grievously wrong when the supposed richest country on the planet refuses to ensure all its workers and their families earn enough to live with dignity, let alone thrive. #SNAP
An estimated 15.7 million workers use SNAP. It’s a lifeline for those in low-wage jobs.

Meanwhile, CEOs are paid 280x as much as the typical worker.

Don’t be angry at workers for using food stamps.

Be angry at the corporations paying them so little that they need them.

Thanks for the breakdown Jeff. I know how frustrating it is to move around Ottawa, and for many buying a car has been the answer. The answer is a bolder transit vision for our country’s capital and a reinforcing operating investment until those pieces of infrastructure come online in coming years.
There's lots to mull in this Citizen article exploring 417 congestion. All is not hopeless but there are challenges. Transit is the key to quicker commutes. Restoring and then improving transit will help speed everyone along.
Why is traffic so bad on Highway 417 in Ottawa?
Here's everything you need to know about how construction, unreliable transit, and returning to the office have made getting to work worse.

Councillor @lainejohnson.bsky.social nails it! In a sound 3P agreement, the private partner/s are supposed to assume the financial risk not, in this case, the City of #Ottawa taxpayers.

I just had to file a police report because a man thought he’d harass me by leaving a message at my office saying I’d have deserved to die from uterine cancer because I helped immunize people against COVID-19. The day I return from medical leave I’m running a Covid-19 and flu clinic. Not intimidated.

Canada Post plans to close the 418 Main St post office on Nov 12 — a vital hub for seniors, low-income residents, and Chinese-speaking community members. I’m calling on Minister Lightbound to halt the closure and consult the community before it’s too late.

Ontario has stopped hosting the report of the SARS Commission. It looks like it is still available via archive-it, but this is a reminder of how vulnerable digital records that embarrass powerful people can be.

For anyone not following along on the #Lansdowne 2.0 conversation, the city is taking away funding that was supposed to go towards affordable housing (originally 50% of amounts over $39M) to instead pay for parking construction ($10M). We are literally taking money from the poor to give to the rich.

Justification #20 on why the towers are such a big deal for the developers. They're going to make affordable housing. As long as we subsidize them. Horrray!

Yep, taking breaks to renew one’s energy is essential. But also feels like a privilege - unhoused people get no breaks 😫 just as one example. Which could be me if Doug Ford’s drive to enrich his buddies continues…push back from constituents can work!
So hard not to be completely discouraged. Often find myself that while the people who voted this council (and previous councils since amalgamation) and the NON-VOTERS deserve this, the rest of us don’t. The capital of missed opportunities to build a compassionate city #RIP

Lying Pete Hoekstra is now dropping f bombs in his attacks on Canada.
He has the gall to accuse of us foreign interference. That was his entire MO when he was ambassador to the Netherlands. They sent him packing.
Canada needs to give this guy the bum's rush.

That's one thing terminally car brained people can't comprehend. Getting people off the road, benefits the die-hards that cannot conceive any other mode of transportation.

Fund transit. Demand more of council and let's unfk this city's ridiculous urban planning skills 🚌🚈💪

Day 130 of showing the internet that (jumping) spiders aren't scary 🙀

Meet Clementine, our bright little jumper with some seriously powerful legs! Jumping spiders don’t rely on big leg muscles to leap, they use hydraulic pressure!💧 #arachtober #cutespider #jumpingspider

It would be a shame if people kept reposting it over and over.
Right! I was surprised to see it. It looked to be lonely, so I had to give it a good home lol
It’s next on my list after I finish rereading The Dispossessed, which is unsurprisingly apropos these days.
