A square graphic with a fiery orange sky and black cityscape. "Kick at the Darkness by Suleikha Snyder" is in flourishing typeface at the bottom. Above it in regular text is the following excerpt “I didn’t want to care,” he said, halting a few feet from the first step. He pivoted to face her. “Those first few years. I didn’t want to care about anything at all. There was just too much loss, too much death, too much blood. I was drenched with it, drowning in it. But I never took a drink. Not even to stop the nightmares.” The black ink flames at his throat seemed to flicker as he swallowed hard. As he drew in a shuddering breath. “My only vice was you.”

My friends and I had Nepali momos and chow mein for dinner, and I am absurdly happy about it. And I got some samosas to take home.
suleikhasnyder.bsky.social
Lol. Thank you, but I don’t think that would be a good idea.
suleikhasnyder.bsky.social
Alas, no. I only have a few books in print and they’re older and not the target audience.

Felicia, thank you! 😍 (And also thank you for what you said on GR. I committed the sin of peeking.)

Oh god. An RFK jumpscare is a horror indeed. This story is opposite and I hope it works for you.

Who doesn’t love a skinny, tattooed, 56-year-old alcoholic former coke addict with a bad knee and occasional erectile dysfunction? Ren Francis is clearly the ideal book boyfriend. Meet him in my alter ego's latest novella, NOBODY’S BARGAIN.

It never fails to amaze me how so many alleged allies are more interested in being held as the authority and being seen as right than they are in listening and being helpful.

Lina’s a beloved member of our romance community, and she could use some support in this devastating and difficult time. Please contribute if you can or boost the link.

So basically I need this event to sell out in the next fifteen minutes—it's for, as they say, a thing—and it would do my heart good if you could all make that happen. OK?

“Rogers Park is a far-north neighborhood & the others are southwest, which in Chicago translates VERY loosely to ‘mostly white’ & ‘mostly not white.’”

That looks like a specific reference to me, but I guess I’m reading those words wrong.

We have a lot of *loud* white people, which is extremely helpful in these situations.
suleikhasnyder.bsky.social
I live here. So I’m aware of the demographics.
suleikhasnyder.bsky.social
Well-meaning people keep citing Rogers Park as a particularly dire ICE incursion because it’s very white and doesn’t have a violent reputation, and that tells me they know very little about Rogers Park and the far North Side.
suleikhasnyder.bsky.social
Rogers Park is not mostly white. It IS somewhat segregated, much like the rest of the city, and people tend to stick to their own micro-neighborhoods, but it is definitely being targeted because of the Latino population.

My hot take is that none of these are structure. These are all recipes that describe structure.

Structure is the Salt, Fat, Acid Heat of writing.

3-Act/Hero's Journey etc are recipes.

You can make great meals without using a recipe if you understand the principles of structure.
ddwardiswriting.bsky.social
So #WritingCommunity how do we feel about structure?

Do you use the 3 act structure? The 5 act?

Hero's Journey? Save the Cat? Super Structure Method? Story Genius Method?

Something else?

What have you got?

Taking it a step further

John Oliver is what most leftists and even radicals claim they are

And it’s because he does something everyone claims to but not.

If you break down his scripts and stories ?

While he uses the worst people as hooks

He focuses on the targets and doesn’t “debunk”
jessiegender.bsky.social
John Oliver is what liberals imagine Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert to be — a genuine critic of America’s systemic failures who stands up for trans people and other marginalized groups, while actually offering real actions and hopeful solutions.

Christopher Columbus himself was a monster, but Columbus Day was instituted in 1892 to combat rising anti-immigrant, anti-Catholic bigotry after the lynching of eleven Italian-Americans. The same revanchists defending Columbus Day as "part of our US heritage" in 2025 would have opposed it in 1892.

books should have an anti-acknowledgements section where the author talks shit about all the people who fucked them over while they were trying to write the thing. not bc I personally want to write one but bc I love gossip
