Excellent think piece by Hugh White. It’s time to walk back our dangerous obeisance to the US and develop a defence strategic posture that is much more appropriate to fundamentally changed circumstances.

In Australia’s post-US future, we must find our own way with China | Hugh White
The Canberra establishment thinks we must depend on Washington more than ever in today’s hard new world. That misses a vital point

Advocates of higher ed did heroic work rallying against this monstrous bill, but its passage was probably preordained. It's custom-made for today's Republican Party. It centralizes power in the executive; undermines education and critical thinking; censors speech; and attacks imaginary wokeness.
Texas legislators just passed a bill that
gives politically-appointed regents control over faculty curriculum, hiring, & governance. It does what they accuse academics of doing: privileging ideas, biases, & agendas on political grounds, & silencing those that do not follow their ideology.
Political appointees would have more control over Texas universities’ courses and hiring under bill OK’d by House
Senate Bill 37 would give more power to university regents, who are appointed by the governor, to vet and veto new curricula and administrators.

It’s the pollsters’ fault Dutton was so unpopular! They told him he was popular when he wasn’t so he didn’t have a chance to become more popular… oh… wait… 😂

I’ve asked the AEC whether a recount is appropriate in Goldstein. They will judge that request on its merits. Thank you again everyone for your support. ZD

Only those, like bullies, are missing a very important intellectual/moral gene if they don’t have empathy.
In fact, it should be embarrassing.
It is a sickness. A flaw.
Elon has this flaw.

Elon Musk called empathy a “weakness” of Western civilization. But philosophers argue the opposite: empathy is a hard-won form of knowledge — and essential for understanding others and making informed decisions buff.ly/WTS28lC #PhilSky
Empathy can take a toll – but 2 philosophers explain why we should see it as a strength
Empathy affords us a more accurate understanding of others’ experiences and emotions. Just like pain, it can be hard to bear – but that’s also the source of its strength.

Fun fact:

Harsh words from judges mean little if they are not backed up by sanctions.
Watching 20 million clips on water colours does not make me a water colour artist.
This right here is why I have a Plan B. With all due respect - Albo doesn't particularly fill me with confidence after watching how they dealt with whistleblowing laws.
Sussan Ley is the Opposition leader - awesome. In about 75 years from now - we may finally have a woman leader in Australia who can dismantle structural misogyny. It takes time to manage such huge social change.
There was the biggest up-tick in women posting for ads for sex work, contacting brothels and auditioning for men's only clubs happened after Julia Gillard forced single mums onto Newstart. Don't @ about women leaders standing up for women.

How hilariously delightful that old mate Angus picked renowned public intellectual and 5 minute Liberal, Jacinta P as his running mate

you want to know one reason people are losing trust in the media? it’s the total inability to call things what they are

some guy on YouTube: “wow this is the most corrupt shit I’ve ever seen”

the Times: “critics say it raises appearance of impropriety”

who are people going to take seriously?
