Herbert Smith, President of the Miners’ Federation of Great Britain 1922-29, was born in a workhouse in Kippax, West Yorkshire #OnThisDay 1862.

A miner from the age of 10, Smith was the miners’ chief spokesman during the 1926 General Strike.
The deadline for the Pennar Scholarship in the Department of History & Welsh History at Aberystwyth University comes at the end of the month. The Department welcomes PhD proposals for research on the social and economic history of Wales in the period 1500 to 2000.

On my way to this workshop on First Person Accounts of medicine and healthcare, and taking Eos Wyn, another Swansea Valley boy, with me. I'll be exploring his poetry and journalism from the nineteenth century and his particular contribution to the ‘culture of invalidism’ in the Victorian period.
