The California Nebula (NGC 1499) is a large, rich patch of emission in Perseus, its trapezoidal shape resembling the State of California. The Ha, SII and OIII components reveal beautifully in narrowband filters, and an OSC camera was used to compose the SHO image below.

My Grandfather’s hair one Halloween. I’d gone to spend some time on the reservation with him & for Halloween, people expected to see “Indians” so he & a bunch of other idiots dressed up& we went to town. I was only 8 at the time & went as a biker princess. We were a motley crew. Good times…

Two years ago, my 90-yr-old dad was in hospice care but not yet down for the count. I made the old navy captain a cardboard replica of his last ship to fit over his wheelchair for his neighborhood halloween carnival, and it was one of the best things I ever did.
