We were all somehow taught the golden rule. 1/3 of us said, "Makes sense." 1/3 of us said, "Huh?" And 1/3 of us said, "I'm too unintelligent to grapple with the various existential quandaries of human existence, so I prefer to take it out on others while acting like a petulant child."

one of my most oddball views as an engineer prof is that it's okay to think that the way people build or use a technology is bad, even if the details of the tech are pretty cool, and it's also okay (good, even!) to opt out of using or contributing to harmful tech

I've finally realized that most of my anxiety stems from living in a society that is organized in a way that is antithetical to my values and my nature, and I feel guilty for "not being normal" when it's the world that is gravely ill.
