Snippet from upcoming Reverse Mini Bang Fic:

Everything looks smaller after ten years.

It smells the same, the carefully polished wooden gym floors gleaming under twinkling lights and spotlights in the corners. There’s a spread of food in the center, cocktail tables littering one end. A dance floor on the other.

Ben cringes when he sees the small stage and podium. It reminds him of senior prom, speeches from emotional seniors hoping to make last attempts at connections with their fellow students. They’ve really gone out of their way to make the reunion special, which says a lot about how hopeful they’re going to be that most of the people attending will make donations towards the school’s endowment.

He ducks under the first of three maroon and gold balloon arches, approaching the back of the check-in line. He nervously slides to a stop, shoes scuffing and dragging a black line from his sole onto the wood. He rubs the toe of his shoe against it, pulling up the mark from one end to the other.

Everything may appear smaller, but that reflex returns to him: that muscle memory of taking care of the pristine floors of the gymnasium, of staring longingly at the patterns in the wood grain to see if he could disappear into them.
