Support folks need to know that you may not be yourself after surgery, and you may not be yourself for a *while* after surgery. Your spoons may be few because your body and brain are dedicated to healing.

Expecting you to heal quickly while you're suffering feels unfair and unkind.

a despair that persists. It can hit immediately after surgery or it can happen after a delay. It can create its own dysphoria. It can appear to lift only to wrestle you to the ground again.

I made sure to get back on hormones and what I needed for mood support, but it *sucked*.

point to perhaps one of the hardest aspects, at least for me: depression. Bottom surgery can cause severe depression that can last months. The body goes through shock, and the brain has to rewire the sensations. That plus having to change your life for maintenance can drop you deeply into...

fuck yes, this is so true.

After I had bottom surgery, I had one friend email me a long email, which included the insinuation that I was too wrapped up in my own stuff to worry about them. Yes, after one of the hardest things I've ever done, I needed time to recover - I'm shocked.

That's not to say we don't all have things we could work on. But if your fundamental, at-rest, unmasked self is not appreciated by your partner or your friend, please find a better partner/friend.

They are out there, and you will feel so much better, and so much more fulfilled, as a result.

if you have friends that only like you when you act a certain way, they aren't your friends.

If your partners only want you to share certain things or be a certain way, they do not love you.

Being your natural self and being loved for it is real connection.
