Definitive proof that the Don Callis Family watched a Best of Okada comp at Don’s birthday party.

13. "mangetout" by Wet Leg (2025)

One of my favorite songs of the year so far. Wet Leg's answer for the Difficult Second Album question was kind of "what if we do the first album again but a little spikier and fuzzier" and y'know what, hell yeah, good answer.

12. "Love is Everywhere" by Magdalena Bay (2024)

and obviously if I love this song's skeleton as a Lil Yachty song I probably love it even more as a Magdalena Bay song. The way it plays as cooler and laid back on the former and euphoric and celebratory on the latter is great!

Bruce Harrell cannot be voted out fast enough

hello computer replication of a dead man, what did you have for breakfast

"And you could say, Well, Dr. Martin Luther King, I've always wanted to meet you. What was your day like today? What did you have for breakfast? And he comes back and he talks to you. How cool would that be if we have a series of historical figures that we all could agree on, that we respect?"

11. "running out of time" by Lil Yachty (2023)

This was the real big winner from the Lil Yachty Psych Experiment for me and I had a big old "oh, well, of course" moment when it turned out Magdalena Bay produced the song and just used its basic structure themselves too a year later.

Lori Vambe into Ranking Ann is one of my favorite segues in a pop poll in forever. Just feels like driving into a dark tunnel and being in that tunnel for ages, getting tese brief captivating flashes of light, and then being shot straight out into the daylight. Might have to split my votes for them.

Just heard the "our sports team has won" neighborhood cannon going off and just slumped down in my chair in relief

Got it, thanks! (And yeah, that's the example I almost used for my question.)

I'm sure you've answered this before but does this clause solely apply to lead artists or do features also count toward the total?

10. "Dangomushi" by Mei Semones (2024)

but really even though I mained "euphoria" in the '24 Pop Poll, this is my *actual* favorite song of 2024. Mei Semones and her band really go off here, sounding like Joe Hisaishi writing the score for an indie romance.

there are like two different days last year where I very much remember being mad at the world and the horn section beat switch pretty much snapped me out of "I'm mad and I don't want to do anything" to "I'm mad and I'm just gonna power through it."

9. "euphoria" by Kendrick Lamar (2024)

I promised myself I'd stop nominating this for song challenges/polls when I stopped finding the Toronto accent bit hilariously mean and nope, sorry, it's still great (TELL ME UR CHEESIN, FAM), you're gonna have to deal with it for another year.

8. "It's Not Just Me, It's Everybody" by Weyes Blood (2022)

Okay maybe after two garage rock picks it's time to get a little less aggro, get a little wistful. Maybe do some dancing, we've got this nice abandoned theater here to do it in. Ignore the dead bodies, those aren't important!

absolutely feels like TK just felt pressured to confirm that they're official but either is *still* in "I don't have all the pieces in place to run this the way I want to" mode or doesn't want to run it and the build for Blood and Guts at the same time (except he did neither last night).
sonofmechamummy.bsky.social
And they had time for all of that, they explicitly had more time than Dynamite usually has, and instead you basically got two backstage promo segments for every single match on the card (except for the women's match...). TK really went into "EWR booker filling out a backyard show" mode.

7. "Bogus Operandi" by The Hives (2023)

If you're going to do one thing your whole career, do it very well. And better yet, take a break from doing it for like a decade so when you do it again people are like "oh right, it's actually pretty great when they do the only thing they do."
sonofmechamummy.bsky.social
Oh this is pick 6, not five. But y'know, phone post, whatever.

5. "brutal" by Olivia Rodrigo (2021)

Glad Elvis Costello was chill about this song's use of *basically* the "Pump It Up" riff both because it's the right attitude for things like this but also because honestly I think I like this song's use of it more. Perfect teenage fit riff.

On Orange Cassidy; symbols and conventions in pro wrestling, using the 10/1/25 Dynamite match with Kyle Fletcher as a quick case study to highlight what some are too stubborn to see.

5. "Angry Girl" by Confidence Man (2022)

Every busy season at work there's some random song I latch on to that manages to keep me sane and this was the Fall 2022 Fuck This Project Banger for sure. Expertly deployed scream-talking by Janet Planet.

4. "Ladies" by Fiona Apple (2020)

When I saw the Ice Spice clause the first artist I thought of that would fill one of those spots was very obvious and so she should be the first I post. This song won me over from the first word (repeated over and over to wonderful effect).

3. "Electric Fish" by Ana Frango Elétrico (2023)

tremendously propulsive throwback Brazilian funk, which also turns out to be a really good song to soundtrack footage of mid-20th century Japanese cinema too as someone I stumbled across on YouTube seems to have found a while back
