If you open the app package properties and copy the icon from there, you will get the icon with system effects baked into it, not the source icon stored in the package.

Also something I noticed when researching this, besides altering the frame shape and adding a border around it, macOS 26 will do edge detection on the app icons and will add effects like gradient and shine to them.

It seems macOS 26 automatically detects if old app icon image uses the official icon template and doesn't have any protrusions.

I noticed that a few apps that weren't updated for a while had their icons shown without extra plating. This surprised me, since all macOS icons before version 26 are transparent images with graphics and shadows baked in.

(🧵 1/5) In macOS 26 Apple enforced the squircle shape for app icons. If an icon doesn't match the new format, it gets "plated" with a gray background.

A list of five applications, detailing why their icons might be "plated" or not. The information is organized into columns: the app icon, "Build Time," "Is Plated?," and "Plating Reason."

ModernDeck: The build time is February 2023. It is not plated.
Laney: The build time is October 2024. It is not plated.
Sketch: The build time is January 2025. It is plated because a custom icon template was used. A note explains  there seems to be some tolerance to slight difference in shadow settings in icon templates, but Sketch used a shadow that is different enough, which resulted in its icon being plated.
Disk Drill: The build time is April 2024. It is plated due to using a custom icon template and having protrusions.
Zotero: The build time is January 2025. It is plated because of protrusions. A note adds that the frame template appears to be official despite this.

My point is that not everyone uses Apple's UI frameworks and if Apple is interested in maintaining consistent design on their own platform, I think they should either publish the reference implementation of the Liquid Glass material (e.g. shader code), or describe it with formulas.

I think you misread what I've written. The documentation does not allow you to recreate your own Liquid Glass if you don't use Apple's UI frameworks.

The available checks is what I'm referring to as fallback in my post — which is also not very desirable as it creates inconsistency on old systems

I agree that using native frameworks is actually superior and developers should prefer them, but I doubt that liquid glass consistency concerns would push many developers into adopting them so Apple should be interested in providing guidelines that at least help maintain design consistency

Also if developers want to continue supporting iOS versions before 26, they have to implement custom glass or introduce a fallback for older systems.

Apple provides no official specification and/or reference implementation for Liquid Glass, which just calls for more design inconsistency on their own platform if developers use anything but SwiftUI/UIKit/AppKit.

Summer is over, better use that vinyl body for something more season-fitting

Was given a cute idea so wanted to do it (totally not as an excuse to draw myself as a pooltoy).

In the next frame, the cat has just turned into a pooltoy with handles, smooshing its own face with bappers and looking concerned, while also having a painted-on grin.
A shadow appears on the pooltoy's face from the ceiling as a piston rushes down and crushes it, then stretches it out, revealing deformed, stretched-out vinyl goo face, and then crushes it again. The piston produces a green vinyl record that’s grabbed by a brown paw and placed on a record player. The vinyl record seems flustered by this arrangement.
