Ms Peggie’s lawyer Naomi Cunningham says there is no third gamete beyond eggs and sperm - Dr Curer said this is a “very simplified definition”. She said there are also chromosomes that “don't produce reproductive organs due to a lack of responsiveness to hormones”. That means someone can carry the chromosomes of one sex but not present at that sex at birth or later in life.

Dr Currer then said: “I don’t believe it is possible to change your chromosomes or carrier type. I do believe it’s possible to change your expression of gender.”

Ms Cunningham is then asking about neovaginas, a surgical cavity made with skin from a penis or colon, which can be surgically created on a trans woman. She said it is “obviously not” a vagina because “any sperm ejaculated into such a cavity would find itself in a dead end with no egg to fertilise”. Dr Currer agrees.
