It horrifies me to think that more than one or two of the ten greatest works in any field were created in the last five or ten years. I think it is nearsightedness that makes us think this way.
I once read that culture is what could be recreated by society from memory if, suddenly, all of the books and movies and artworks disappeared. I often think about that when people are judging artworks, but especially when they are ranking them.
