Happy to see the @breastcancerorg.bsky.social highlighting our study presented at the #ESMOBreast2025 🔬
At #ESMOBreast2025, @sixtenharborg.bsky.social
shared a significant analysis from the Nurses’ Health Study showing that weight gain after diagnosis may raise #breastcancer death risk. Study followed 6,800+ women between 1978 - 2018, with follow-up ranging from 4–15 years.

Based on our findings and others, we propose that research is warranted into whether BC survivors might benefit from metabolic screening during their treatment course to improve their chances of avoiding a recurrence or death from their malignancy 🔬🧪🧑‍🔬
More research is needed ❗️
The molecular changes affecting breast cancer progression in women with metabolic syndrome are complex
Recurrence and BC mortality 📈

Our analyses show that the presence of metabolic syndrome among BC survivors is equally harmful in people living in Europe, Asia or North America 🌍
🚨PUBLISHED🚨

In an extensive effort to chart the impact of living with metabolic syndrome among BC survivors we conducted a large meta-analysis of >42,000 patients.

We found that BC survivors living with metabolic syndrome had shorter DFS 📉 and increased risk of….
Metabolic syndrome increases the risk for breast cancer events!

🚨 A meta-analysis reveals a 69% higher recurrence risk & 83% higher mortality risk in BC survivors with metabolic syndrome.

➡️ Is it time to prioritize metabolic health in BC care?

It's a difficult topic to discuss- weight. Hugely personal, not easy to change, but impt.

4% ⬆️ recurrence in pts w/ node + #bcsm obese vs. lean

2% ⬆️ recurrence in pts with N0 dz

📌Magnitude of effect larger among premeno.

📌ER + AND ER neg

The discussion turns towards a wish of longitudinal weight measures during follow-up 📊
Beautifully depicted work on obesity and risk of distant recurrence in BC pts by EBCTCG👏🏻

Across data from 147 including 200.000+ pts they demonstrated that BMI is independently associated with risk of distant recurrence regardless of treatment characteristics📈

Thank you so much! It was great chatting with you too and thank you for sharing your insights.
Lifestyle interventions will need to be a vital parameter of future studies assessing GLP1ra’s role in adjuvant BC care❗️
and future studies should carefully consider the ethics of inducing a weight loss with anti obesity medication in BC pts…if the drug is not efficacious it might leave pts with increased fat mass deposits when discontinuing the AOM.
Still many questions to answer with regards to weight loss medications application in BC care❓

Prospective studies are needed❗️
A great start to @sabcs.bsky.social day 3 with a session on survivorship.

Intriguing data on GLP-1ra’s in adjuvant BC care❗️ As suspected by many GLP1ra’s seems to be less effective in pts treated with ET…

Brilliantly discussed by @neil-iyengarmd.bsky.social 👏🏻
Happy to be @sabcs.bsky.social and share the results from our study on the risk of CVD events and CVD mortality in BC patients with type 2 diabetes 🫀📈

Thankful to @graspcancer.bsky.social for awarding our poster with the GRASP Advocate Choice Award🏅

BWEL intervention with diet and weight loss is able to improve:
✅metabolic biomarkers
✅insulin resistance
✅ stress biomarkers
BWEL study presented by Dr. Jennifer Ligibel. Looking forward to future data with improved breast cancer outcomes. @dfcibreastonc.bsky.social #SABCS24
