it can often end up a box-with-cheese trap - you're technically connecting the story with the game to show off a guy being cool or some badass thing happening but when someone sits back and asks if it's mainly expediting typically lengthy processes it's super hard to *not* notice when it is

i think a reason it tends to pop up a lot in some games is because it offers an easy way to narratively establish substantial beats without making the player question the pacing in the moment - like its easy to go 'if this guy bails out the party then he's justified his presence narratively in full'

like XC1 makes it that every boss that doesnt end with you specifically killing them in the cutscene after it ends at health thresholds that vary based on 'how badly do you not win in the cutscene', it solves the narrative issue but also makes 80% of bosses a dice roll on 'should i engage with this'

i will say 'win the fight lose the cutscene' is kinda annoying but considering how some games try to solve the issue i'm kinda happy a lot of games don't really bother on mechanically justifying that kind of story beat because MAN it can get bad sometimes

these propellors i rigged up so it could do goofy magic casting animations were genius they're so good at helping communicate a sense of body language during attacks where the wings themselves can't articulate maybe i'm cracked at this enemy design thing

the feeling of having someone upload your art to another site is a really weirdly enthralling one sometimes i'll look myself up just to be like 'wonder if anyone's ever said anything about me online or something' and it's like oh damn someone liked my art enough to share it somewhere else that rocks

i hate the blood type part so much because i'm working on a game where i have to include it in a type system and every correlation i've come up with for it has sounds so stupid. 'blood resists water because the saying blood is thicker than water' c'mon man.

DQXI feels like its going for a "you don't really need a super in-depth story as long as you have a fun style and funny characters!" style of RPG but like. aggressively so to the point where it will bash its own knees with a baseball bat whenever they start doing anything reaching any level of story
