XMAS SHROOMS

I heard this tale long ago
At this time of year they grow
These magic living things among us
A very special kind of fungus

Yes, they are the Christmas shrooms
Appearing as the Yuletide looms
But they've been forgotten, you see
Over them we've picked the Christmas tree

I suppose it was seeing "Hellraiser," the original. During one scene the guy in front of me literally jolted an inch or two out of his seat. That was the only time I ever saw that happen.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

There are some problems with ALIENS. Ripley ends up 60 years in the future, but things haven't changed much. Unlikely for an advanced society. Then there are the anachronisms. Van Leuwen's "shake&bake colony" and Hudson's "illegal alien" joke. The US southern border is unlikely to still be an issue.

In case anyone is interested, I found it. It's a story called "Encounter with a Carnivore" by Joseph Green, published in 1975.

Margaret St Clair sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/st_cla... was born on this day, so here's some interior magazine art for her stories from 1949 (artist: 1&3 Hannes Bok, 2 [uncredited], 4 Virgil Finlay). 1st for "The Counter Charm", 4th for "Jamieson". An excellent short story writer:

I just finished reading ALAS, BABYLON by Pat Frank and I must say that after more than sixty years it still holds up. The very beginning is a little slow and there is a bizarre switch in main viewpoint character early on, but the story still packs a wallop.

For some reason the premise of PLURIBUS--a genetic structure transmitted to Earth by an alien race--gave me a sense of deja vu.

BEASTLY

It came shambling out of the east
The terrible awful horrendous beast
Upon the people it began to feast
Exhibiting no mercy in the least

One man went forth the thing to slay
A lowly peasant whose name was Ray
In no time him the beast did flay
And continues its slaughter to this day

PICKMAN'S MOTEL

Of accommodations it's the finest
Place in Arkham to stop and rest
Though the staff's looks are unusual
Pale and gaunt like that of a ghoul

Checking in is pleasant and nice
Checking out you will do twice
Once when you die in your room
Then your corpse the staff doth consume
