It had never ever occurred to me that people don't know Lolita died. Like even if you skip the foreword or her married name doesn't click later, humbert literally says the manuscript isn't to be published until she's dead.
Funny juxtaposition. Amis always said he'd start every conversation about Lolita with a single question and if the other party couldn't answer it correctly he'd walk away. The question? "What is Lolita's ultimate fate?"

framing Lolita as a “great and tragic love story” speaks volumes about Rowling’s worldview, but it is also fascinating to me that she doesn’t seem to understand what an unreliable narrator is
If anyone's curious, this is the full version of that Rowling/Lolita quote

I love this song 🎶
read online that someone set-up a premium rate phone number where callers get charged $3.99/ min. then they posted flyers in their neighborhood that said "call this number to report illegal aliens," but the number just puts them on hold with music. so far, they've made $17,000

The Pitt got greenlit for a season 3, out next February, and the announcement has very funny comment from HBO chairman Casey Bloys that’s like “yeah, turns out if you just make a TV show like how we used to make TV shows you can have a 15+ episode season every year 🤷‍♂️”

Not sure what theories are inadequate here. That members of a marginalized group might/can work for the system that marginalizes their people is one of the oldest topics. There’s an infinite amount of literature on it.

Japan is probably still my favourite place to visit but somehow I don't think first responders kiss you on both cheeks there when you've had heatstroke.

If you ever wonder why I often say Western analysis of China is misleading, it's because a lot of China experts (even the liberal ones) are primarily motivated by ideas of Western superiority to the point they end up projecting

This is the first time this leading China expert has mentioned Epstein
*extremely american thing* yeah but can you imagine china doing it?

I had to leave after Blood because of how ill I was but heard Sorrows outside the venue. Would have been nice to hear give em hell (where sharpest in my name comes from) and vampires, but it is what it is! I'm just pleased I can stop regretting Canada and move on lmao

Things I have learned on this trip: most people are incredibly kind if you need help. I fell over in Santiago and collapsed in Buenos Aires and so many people were so kind. I have also learned that if I give my name and age in Spanish via Google translate, my name just becomes my mother's name lmao
