I've always been impressed by Arthur C. Clarke's vision of lunar colonies. "Earthlight" and "A Fall of Moondust" come to mind.

A lunar colony definitely will need to be larger than eight people to be successful. The people selected for the Biosphere experiment largely were the wrong personality types for the initial settlement.
