ICYM: International bodies for which the US Administration has apparently stopped paying assessed dues include (thread):
Blog: US Funding of International Organizations Has Collapsed

With weeks left in FY, US has paid zero toward assessed (membership) contributions to WHO, WTO, FAO, ILO, UNESCO, NATO, OECD, WMO, WIPO & more.

FY26 budget suggests paying dues to only 7 out of 46 organizations under the IO account.

What will AI look like by 2030 if current trends hold?

Our new report zooms in on two things: (1) whether scaling continues (compute, data, power, capital), and (2) the capabilities this enables—especially for scientific R&D.

AI can help protect democracies or empower those who threaten freedom: corporations, oligarchs, or governments. The key question is: who does AI serve? We should all care about the answer, writes Richard Reisman (@rreisman.bsky.social).

AI must serve the people who use it to engage in free expression and make democratic decisions, writes Richard Reisman.

🧵 Several people have raised questions about what I meant by "deservedly so" when referring to the decline of institutional trust. It's a fair question, so I want to explain that, because it sits at the heart of my work on how democracies collapse when their epistemic foundations rot.
The conditions that have led to what’s happening in the US today exist in democracies around the world.
They are an inevitable outcome of our collective failure to adapt to fundamental changes in the information ecosystem on which our democracies were originally built.

I know Yglesias isn't everyone's favorite, but it's amazing how angry many people -often with PhDs-get at a suggestion that there are tradeoffs in politics. Remarkably, many who purport to believe the republic is hanging by a thread are in the "no compromise with the voters!" camp.
I think a really underrated idea for Democrats would be to to try:

(a) Study public opinion accurately
(b) Adopt views, especially on social and moral values issues that align with public opinion

Or they can try this.

I'm quoted in this fact-check for the claim that the UK has "the 12th largest female health gap in the world", which was widely shared by MPs & media in the UK.

The answer is no, and the male wellness company who calculated this statistic reviewed & deleted their page while this piece was written.
Does the UK really have the 12th largest ‘female health gap’ in the world? – Full Fact
Unreliable research from a male wellness company, which claimed that women are less healthy than men in the UK, has been widely shared by MPs, the media and institutions around the country.

Announcing our latest arxiv paper:

Societal and technological progress as sewing an ever-growing, ever-changing, patchy, and polychrome quilt

We argue for a view of AI safety centered on preventing disagreement from spiraling into conflict.
Societal and technological progress as sewing an ever-growing, ever-changing, patchy, and polychrome quilt
Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems are increasingly placed in positions where their decisions have real consequences, e.g., moderating online spaces, conducting research, and advising on policy. Ens...

Many amoral 'useful geniuses' getting one-shotted by power-seeking Bad Guys. Hannah Arendt's 'banality of evil' is more relevant than ever, and it's sad how fragile values are and how quickly we can sleepwalk into dystopia. Here's to hoping that better angels of our nature win!
