If you choose, you can consider this desperation a minority problem in America, today, and then try to forget about it. But I believe this invisibility and this silence of the real and various peoples of our country is a political situation of language that every one of us must move against, because our lives depend on it. I believe we will have to eliminate the passive voice from our democracy. We will have to drown out the official language of the powerful with our our mighty and conficting voices or we will perish as a people. Until we can tell our children that the powerful people are the children, themselves, then l do not see why we should expect our children to read or write anything Until we can tell our children that truth is the purpose of our American language, and that the truth is what they know and feel and need, then I believe our children will continue to act as though the truth is just something that will get you into trouble. The figures from this are very dope because they split institutions by whether they reported previously considering race in admissions and you see a clear difference. The share of students who are Black in 2024, at institutions that previously used race, is the lowest it's been in a decade.

It shows that the trend in share of Black students for all institutions drops slightly in 2024 but that is being driven by institutions that used to consider race in admissions, which had a sizeable drop. In fact, the share of students who are Black for institutions that used to consider race is the lowest it's been in a decade in 2024.

Been helping the folks at CBS news think through admissions data in a post-sffa world. They collected the largest dataset so far of uni's fall 2024 enrollment by race (and standardized it). Caveat caveat caveat, the clearest trend is:

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."

This kicker is the whole ball game. This is why we cannot rely solely on talking about the ROI of universities to explain its value. Why we have to actually talk about the ways higher ed can be an active force for cultural uplift. That integration is one of the raisons d'être of US higher ed.
