“Fuck,” Ed rasps. “Fuck, mate, will you get over here? Need to tell you something.” The anxiety is pouring off of Stede in visible torrents. His face is pinched, and he’s standing too taut, too straight. He does as Ed asks and heads over to the couch, but he perches gingerly on the edge like he’s sitting on a bed of nails. He looks like Ed’s about to announce that he’s dying. Or that Ed’s about to break up with him. Or that Ed’s dying to break up with him. “Do something different with your face,” Ed demands, in a choked-up rush. “Please, mate. You look like a kicked cat.” Stede pants a terrified laugh. He does not do anything different with his face. It’s an echo of the other night, when Ed had demanded that Stede stop looking at him. Not a very nice echo, though. Stede’s still a ghastly shade of white, one that seems to be hedging into green territory. Fuck. Not good. Ed’s gotta just– He snatches frantically for a hand, and he feels the tremor of Stede’s bones against his own. He squeezes hard; hard as he fucking can without breaking anything. “Mate, I’m– I just– I like you, man. I really, really fucking like you, okay?” Stede does something different with his face. It’s a welcome change. His jaw releases. Colour seeps back into his cheeks. He lets free a sigh that sounds like it weighs more than a fucking Buick. “Oh,” he says, so relieved that it comes with the slight titter of a laugh. “That’s– Ed, that’s…not exactly news to me. I mean, I think we’ve already established–” “Might be a bit in love with you, even.”

One downside of approaching life in a generally rational way is sometimes I forget to feel my feelings? Like I jump straight to acceptance (because ultimately if something is out of my control, why fret over it?) and I kind of forget that grief is a thing.

In a small room tucked away in the back of Merperson Flotation Therapy, sprawled across a honeycomb tessellation of white tiles, hair dripping, limbs heavy: Edward Teach is kissing the man he loves. There are several things that don’t make a lick of sense about this. It doesn’t make sense that Ed is on the floor, for starters. He has absolutely no recollection of climbing out of the tank, and yet here he is. (He’s propped himself up on one palm, his legs splayed out in a messy pile behind him. His wrist aches, and it'd maybe ache less if he popped his other hand on the floor too, distribute his weight a bit more evenly, but…nah. Good suggestion, but no, thanks all the same.) (The fingers of Ed’s free hand are in Stede’s hair, so. That hand is not going anywhere.) It doesn’t make sense that everything is blue. Dim, deep, rippling. Ed feels like he’s been tethered beneath the surface of the sea. (It’s the lights from the pod. They must have eased their way back on while Ed’s eyes were closed. They’re on a timer. Sixty minutes. Ed reckons he couldn’t have been in the pod for much longer than thirty minutes. Which means Ed has been kissing Stede for a very, very long time.) (This doesn’t make any sense either. Timer must be broken.) The fact that Ed has just now decided that he’s in love: this, too, does not make any sense. He hadn’t been in love an hour ago, or a day ago, or a week before that. And that’s gotta be a fucking glitch in the human condition, right? That you can just not be in love one moment, and then the next you are? Who the fuck approved that in the design process? (Only…this does, actually, make at least a little bit of sense. That Ed is in love.) (Because it’s slowly dawning on Ed that…maybe he had been in love an hour ago. And a day ago. And a week before that.) (Maybe he just didn’t need to be able to name it to feel it.) There’s one main thing, though, that absolutely does make sense. Complete, exhaustive, faultless, comprehensive…
