It was a privilege to interview @gabrielfinkelstein.bsky.social for @awaisaftab.bsky.social’s Psychiatry on the Margins, where we discuss the 19th C scientist Emil Du Bois-Raymond’s famous dictum regarding consciousness: “Ignoramus et ignorabimus“, or “we are ignorant and we will remain ignorant.”

RIP Diane Keaton. One of the most unique and affecting movies I’ve seen is her sole screen-writing and directing credit: Heaven (1987) a documentary interviewing people on their beliefs regarding the afterlife. A true original. youtu.be/L9KKuOMv_lE?...

Whether one believes Joan’s testimony that she was sent by God, her extraordinary vision and achievement remains indubitable.

Dream: studying with Husserl. He’s very kind, accommodating, and hits me up for some money so he can travel.

Yeah I dunno at one time I think the filmmakers were taking it as a competition esp. with the New French Extremity filmmakers. It’s normative maaaan, meaning the sense that it very much depends on what one judges as extreme. Hence genocide docs are certainly messed up.
schizosemia.bsky.social
Yeah and my apologies for that. I really could not remember specifics, other than messed up. Probably the most recent edition of fucked up movie I watched was Girl with the Needle. On MUBI now. Very difficult . And based upon a true story. Perhaps making it even worse.

Also, to be fair to you, @schizosemia.bsky.social holds the title for most fucked up movie recommendation with Border.
schizosemia.bsky.social
Oh dude, I could probably recommend some worse ones honestly. But I wear the most fucked up movie recommendation badge with honour. ❤️❤️🥰

Its even the fact that new norms are sometimes generated out of these sorts of experiences. Whether or not that constitutes madness in whatever sense Sadler has in mind. Dunno. Must read more.
schizosemia.bsky.social
Interesting - thanks! That is from before publication of this so makes me wonder 🤔 . I also read Awais’ interview with Sadler on this book. I guess the thing I’m honing in on is Sadler’s view of the history. Still plodding through it. Very interesting stuff.

I really like this book, but the one glaring thing that it seems to be missing is that morality is something that is often, throughout history derived from ‘madness,’ going out of one’s mind, or so-called abnormal behaviour.
schizosemia.bsky.social
This is a very good question.
