The plant stress hormone salicylic acid has unexpected functions in growth and development. Notably, the classical SA receptores NPRs seems not to participate. If you want to know more, have a look at the little review we wrote: www.frontiersin.org/journals/pla...

Amazing!
Using precise spatial and temporal analysis, researchers in Science provide insight into how bacteria around the root interact both with the plant and with each other.

7/ Taken together, this represents a novel mechanism to attenuate growth, potentially to allow SA reallocating resources to enhance plant robustness. Shout-out to Dr. Jonas Müller for leading the crew and thanks to all collaborators and the @dfg.de and BioComp for funding

6/ Notably, the vha a3 vha a3 mutant resembles SA treated plants (shorter roots, cell size differences of atricho-and trichoblasts) and has significantly elevated endogenous SA levels

5/ Turns out that SA treatment increases vacuolar pH by inhibiting V-ATPase activity

4/…..we assessed vacuolar occupancy (relative size) in different zones of the root.

3/ ….but PIN2 and auxin receptor mutants are not resistant again SA mediated growth inhibition. Since auxin impacts on vacuole size….

Interested in plant hormones? Check out our newest research paper in @plantphys.bsky.social about a novel role of Salicylic Acid (SA) restricting growth: academic.oup.com/plphys/artic...
Salicylic acid inhibits V-ATPase activity and restricts cell elongation
The phytohormone salicylic acid directly inhibits V-ATPase activity and cell elongation thereby limiting plant growth.

Its really cool how more and more of the PILS functions are revealed! Including a couple of unexpected turns 😀

11 years ago I did experiments which contribute to the cool story from @kleinevehnlab.bsky.social @seinabnoura.bsky.social about how the ERAD machinery controls the conditional turnover of PIN-LIKES for acclimative growth. Science often requires quite some time:

New preprint out!
We reveal that ERAD, a protein degradation pathway, selectively targets intracellular PILS auxin transport facilitators to control growth.
This expands ERAD's role beyond protein quality control, right into developmental regulation.
