without jhane myers and her team, this movie wouldn't be a shadow of what it is. in fact, because of them, there's an entire comanche dub of this movie, and that's the version you should go watch rn
Naru fighting Predator

she also recruited dustin tahmahkera and the late juanita pahdopony, who both co-consulted on everything from language and name accuracy, to the look of clothing and weaponry, to the story itself
sassylich.bsky.social
myers recruited fellow experts like kevin starblanket, who taught the cast comanche combat, tracking, and sign language

all of prey's cast and crew do their jobs beautifully. this is a STELLAR movie, through and through. but imo the real powerhouse behind prey is jhane myers, producer and lead comache cultural consultant for the film
jhane myers talking to amber midthunder on the set of prey

in fact these guys take up very little screen time, w/ the majority of the movie (thankfully) being devoted to amber midthunder and dakota beavers as naru & taabe, who KILL it (metaphorically & literally). they give the most grounded, heart-wrenching performance of siblings i've seen in a long time

predator is a brilliant mirror for the brutality of colonialism. they're both invaders, hunting for trophy and sport--and like just predator, the trappers don't realize they can be prey, too. rest assured, you're gonna get to see these dudes get murked in a lot of very fun ways
sassylich.bsky.social
on top of all the alien shit, naru has to deal with french fur traders, whose dialogue is never translated from french, even in the subtitled versions (which was a fun little touch i really loved)
said french fur traders, yelling and pointing a gun off-screen

now fair warning: prey doesn't pull a single punch. the violence is visceral and constant--and not just because predator is fighting everything and everyone he can get his laser-sights on
sassylich.bsky.social
spoiler alert: she sure as hell's gonna go for it, ready or not, and she's gonna do it with the coolest weapons you've ever seen. because this is a predator movie
sassylich.bsky.social
naru's brother, taabe, gets the thesis of the film down less than five minutes in: "you really think you're ready? you wanna hunt something that's hunting you?"
taabe, played by dakota beavers, looking at his little sister naru skeptically

prey is set in 1719 on the great plains. we follow naru, a young comanche woman, who is trying to track the predator himself to protect her tribe and prove herself as a competent hunter. because like any good predator movie, predator himself isn't the only one who's doing the hunting

if you've ever wondered "how did predator decide humans were the most dangerous game? don't we have big ol' bears and lions and shit?" then wonder no more. in prey, you get to see one decide we're the scariest things here in real time

i picked it once i saw what day i was scheduled, and realized that prey would be a better choice than anything else i had written down!!

heyyy everyone! it's my first ever #hauntalong entry, and it's indigenous peoples day, so we're gonna talk about PREY (2022), the coolest movie in the predator franchise

Weeeeeee're baaaack.

This year, we've got a full month of recos, and we'll truly push Bluesky's threading feature well beyond the black rainbow.
