Make everything a little clearer than you think it needs to be.

I love the last couple of hours of the day when everything is done and everyone else has gone to bed and my brain is a little tired.

I think it unhooks the overly analytical part of me and lets me get really creative work done.

Note to self, and maybe everybody else:

You do not need to know why you are writing a thing.

You do not need to know your point, your theme, your moral argument.

That may be the last thing you know.

This is fine. Trust that there is a why.

I wouldn’t be writing if I weren’t seeking meaning.

This! This is what I’m trying to do. At least not write 30K to figure out that something doesn’t work for me.

Happy Independent Bookstore Day to all who celebrate, which should be all of you because indie bookstores fucking rule. (I’m at the LATFOB today and will be signing at the booth of a great store, @mystgalaxybooks.bsky.social)

How do you learn to trust yourself again.

I’m second guessing every idea I have.

So confused by this “crisis of masculinity” bullshit. Is the crisis because we can cry now? Like, I can bench the same when I love all my queer friends and my calloused hands are still manly when I’m reading a book by a woman. “Manliness” is bullshit. Be you. Be good. Love hard. Forget the rest.

Writing fiction is fucked up.
The better you get at it, the harder it is.

Beautiful article about Caravaggio, the pope, art and humanity.
A Closer Look at Pope Francis’ Favorite Painting (Gift Article)
Caravaggio was an artist of rare directness, whose naturalistic pictures brought the heavens down to earth. Our critic Jason Farago shows you what Francis may have seen in them.

New ink in honor of a book of my heart that may or may not see the light of day.

I need to remember that I don’t need to get those first sentences right the first time. I just need to figure out more or less where the story starts.

Me too! Usually shortly after I’ve finally turned out the light. Or at 5am when I want to go back to sleep. I leave myself voice memos on my phone. Bonus is that I sound hilarious when I’m half asleep.
