Oh wow, yes, my old man…went to MIT, aluminum, thanks, Dad, for sending me to college.
It wasn’t my first job, but but I first went to Grumman in Bethpage in the spring of 1947, worked inr Plant 2 that summer, drilling 50,000 holes in aluminum for the all the brackets in the first five production F9F jets, carpooling with Paul Lucinsky (sp?), and in the summers of 1948 and 1949, then moved to Plant 5 for the summer 0f 1950. I started at Grumman on graduating from MIT in 1951, at Plant 5, which housed the 500 engineers who had worked there during WWII and designed the propeller airplanes that were carrier based. I watched the first flight of the swept wing version of the F9F, used in Korea and flown by The Blue Angels for many years. Met Bob McConaghy in the summer of ’47 in Plant 2, when he invited me to rush for Theta Chi. he arrived later than the person who had convinced me th at Delta Tau Delta—DTD—was the No. 1 fraternity at MIT. They were way out in Brookline, and I’m glad that I was blackballed by Jim Cooney. Theta Chi, at 528 Beacon Street, Boston, was a much better place to be.
