know), Rule 8(a), Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, requires that a complaint include
“a short and plain statement of the claim showing that the pleader is entitled to relief.” Rule 8(e)(1) helpfully adds that “[e]ach averment of a pleading shall be simple,
concise, and direct.” Some pleadings are necessarily longer than others. The difference likely depends on the number of parties and claims, the complexity of the governing facts, and the duration and scope of pertinent events. But both a shorter pleading and a longer pleading must comprise “simple, concise, and direct” allegations
that offer a “short and plain statement of the claim.” Rule 8 governs every pleading
in a federal court, regardless of the amount in controversy, the identity of the parties,
the skill or reputation of the counsel, the urgency or importance (real or imagined) of
the dispute, or any public interest at issue in the dispute.

Dear Secretary Noem,
It is clear that you and the Trump Administration have abused the power of the Department of Homeland Security to pursue a campaign of persecution, mass incarceration, and deportation.
Since your appointment, you have disregarded the authority of Congress, the rule of law, the constitutional rights of residents, the courts, due process, and every check and balance that protects us from authoritarianism.
Under your supervision, DHS has irreversibly harmed Americans. You have exploited your position as Secretary to weaponize enforcement to detain, deport, and violate people, letting your department run amok with no regard for the rule of law. Under your leadership, Homeland officials and law enforcement have unlawfully broken into and forced people out of their homes, brutally abused children and women in broad daylight, and disappeared immigrants, legal residents, and citizens alike. You have wasted millions of taxpayer dollars on anti-immigrant propaganda campaigns and illegally detained people in offshore prisons without due process.
Your shameful actions have also left children and women vulnerable and without counsel. Your intentional criminalization of immigrants and those who dare to dissent threatens the very foundations of our democracy. You are running out of money to execute the horrors we are witnessing, and you are running out of excuses for your despicable actions.
As a Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, I take my obligation to provide oversight seriously. I have written letters and have demanded, on the record, that you come before the committee to answer our questions. Your lack of respect for Congress as a co-equal branch of government is evidenced by your reckless dismantling of oversight capacities within the Department, including the Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman. In just the last

week, your obstruction of Members of Congress conducting oversight in New Jersey at an ICE detention center proves you lack a commitment to accountability. Your efforts are emboldened by House Republicans who continue to enable your reign of terror across the country.
I believe in due process, the rule of law, and the Constitution. I believe in our democracy, in hecks and balances, and accountability. I believe that undermining our laws and processes mak is all less safe. And because I believe in those things, I cannot allow you to continue to violat the rights of the people, undermine due process, and misuse our resources. You are one of the greatest threats to our national security.
Kristi Noem, I demand you resign from your position as Secretary of Homeland Security effective immediately.
