but! with hindsight, do you really believe what you're saying? or are you rationalizing your past actions & experience separate from the knowledge you've gained/life you've lived since high school? seems like it. "not MY republicans!" anyway. i guess i was never a young republican so what do i know.

everyone, particularly journalists, has to pay attention to their own biases & presenting anecdotal evidence - which i have also done here! - then doubling down, blowing up at critics, and disabling replies isn't great. my experience is not your experience. and there are people replying in bad faith

it's easy to get defensive and retreat into the story about the past you constructed and take as objective fact. but it's not very useful to do that, and the unwillingness to reflect and see that maybe, just maybe, things weren't so cut and dry is telling. there's a clear disconnect with reality.

to say "they weren't like this when i was a young republican!" is, again, in my experience, ahistorical and willfully naive. if i'm being generous. maybe you didn't see it, but it was there. beating this drum then going all woe is me when challenged is a natural reaction. it sucks to be called out!

it doesn't matter. if i was a few years older, i'd put money on the young repubs being unbearable during the gingrich & norquist years, and before that iran contra, the southern strategy, watergate, etc. etc. etc. the entire party has always been a grievance machine based in othering & "i got mine."

shit got bad, BAD, after the iraq war started. it is worse now! but the deeply-rooted, casually tossed around hate was always there. maybe members of the chamber of commerce had better control of their children, who they didn't want to be OPENLY racist/sexist/homophobic? for business?

this played itself out over and over again, but the facade of ideological legitimacy - and that's all it is & ever was - was already cracked for me circa 1999-2001 (WONDER WHY) and 9/11 was basically a landslide. the veneer slid away completely, revealing the petty bigotry machine behind the scenes.

republicans have gotten *worse* but it's more of a gradual revelation than a sea change. i have a similar background to marcotte (close to the same age, small town TX vs MO) and my experiences are the polar opposite. by the time i got to college the republicans, young or not, were already the enemy.

i will always associate this with trump getting coronavirus because i was listening to fleetwood Mac and MY NEIGHBORS WERE LISTENING TO FLEETWOOD MAC when the news dropped and it was unbelievably funny, then seeing the original video was magical and cemented itself in my brain. Beautiful
