and since which, not a single VRA vote denial claim has been won by plaintiffs. not one. I guess it's operating as intended by Alito.

I fear this is exactly what is going on.

THE WHOLE REASON we're arguing the case this year, after it was ALREADY argued last year, is that Roberts couldn't figure out how to get away from the court's own ruling in Milligan. Now, he's figured it out.

“the constitution forbids race conscious remedies” would be news to the people who wrote the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments

Griem goes there, arguing in response to Justice Jackson that there can be no race-conscious remedy absent a finding of intentional discrimination.

As long SCOTUS is considering issues not properly before them in Callais, I'm all for giving representation to West Virginia Democrats and Illinois Republicans. Come on Court overule Rucho and let us bring partisan vote dilution claims while you're at it!

Justice Kavanaugh in the Callais oral argument keeps alluding to some longstanding requirement of strict scrutiny that use of race have a time limit. This is invented.

Missed TV line opportunity by Sotomayor in Callais: "Last time you told us that you drew the map to protect incumbents, are you now walking that back?" -- could have been "were you lying then or are you lying now!"
ruthgreenwood.bsky.social
Very disruptive! states can ignore injunctions over their maps, create new maps that have whatever they want in them and plaintiffs have to bring a new PI to stop it? It's litigation (and SCOTUS shadow docket stays) all the way down...

Especially since Ralph Gingles pronounced his name "jingles" as articulated by Julius Chambers representing him in 1986!

Today Law Forward is continuing our challenge to Wisconsin's gerrymandered congressional maps. We're arguing this anti-competitive gerrymandering case deserves its day in court before a three-judge panel. Democracy demands fair maps.

I have never seen such a blistering rebuke of a President by a federal judge. He is telling us clearly to stand up for our liberty against a dictator. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

tl;dr on the government’s brief in Callais (constitutionality of the voting rights act) seems to be “stare decisis is for suckers” cite: Dobbs. Amiright @leahlitman.bsky.social

Alright, one evening of preparing slides, and I am in love with @caseviewerapp.bsky.social (Case Viewer). Easy to find "that ridiculous Kennedy quote," "that awesome Kagan quip" and also "that cool chart from the slip op," and quickly throw them into a PPT. Thanks @beidelson.bsky.social!!

I registered vote using the voter registration form provided by the League after my citizenship ceremony. It was like a warm embrace from my new family. Such a shame to see it go.

An Aug. 29 policy statement from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the federal agency, will from now on bar nonpartisan groups such as the League of Women Voters from offering voter registration services at the end of naturalization ceremonies. /1

But at the very least he's in the reckless category. Either way, I'd suggest a breaktime so he can manage his dysregulation and come back ready to engage properly with us. Here the "us" is American democracy.
ruthgreenwood.bsky.social
I've been explaining to my kids the difference between doing something on purpose (=> breaktime), by accident (no breaktime), and being so reckless that you should have seen the disaster coming (=> breaktime). I think CJR is in the "on purpose" category.

It’s me, talking about voter suppression.
americanprogress.bsky.social
Voter suppression has had severe impacts on Americans of color, but the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965 has helped protect voters from voter suppression tactics.

@ruthgreenwood.bsky.social and William Roberts explain voter suppression ahead of the VRA anniversary on August 6th: buff.ly/DrrfxHg

Weird feeling to be cited by Thomas in support of a position I completely disagree with. What he should have got from this article is that the problem of racial polarization in voting still exists and so we need both the federal VRA and state VRAs to protect systemically marginalized voters' rights.
