The NYT can’t say lied because it assumes unobservable internal states and is therefore biased. But it can say pride because it involves a fascist stunt by a Republican.

This lede imputes an emotion to Vance (he “watched with pride”) that can’t be known and then quotes with no analysis, his over-the-top claim about the “unbeatable power” of the artillery shells.

VP JD Vance watched with pride on Saturday as Marines fired 150-milllimeter artillery shells over a major freeway in Southern California, calling hte demonstrates a “testament to the corps strength and unbeatable power.”

I appreciate the steady pressure, but I do think these interviews should stop and force people like Johnson to explain why they just lied. Don't move on. Ask them why they used an erroneous example, and why the next example he wants to give should be considered truthful given that lie.

The reason for this is that this class of people has internalized the idea of conservatives as the American Volk, an idea downstream of the senate and EC giving them more power than their numbers that has somehow become a quasi spiritual belief about the nature of the country

One of Trump’s enduring legacies will be that nobody can trust the US government’s promises.

Not informants or refugees promised safety, not contractors promised funding, not NATO allies promised protection, not businesses promised legal terms, and not individuals promised constitutional rights.
