I think it's important to mention that I'm VERY lucky. I am insured, can afford my treatments/medications thanks to (currently) reasonable co-pays & a team of truly excellent doctors. They don't know what's wrong with me (and we've done so, so many scans), but they treat my pain with real empathy.

My hubby has been amazing. He's willing to live in a dim-lit bubble of air purifiers & knows exactly how to take care of me. When shit happens in public (there's a restaurant w/ a dark corner & staff who knows my issues), he handles all of the well-meaning pain-in-the-ass people asking what's wrong.

(I know that I have a small following, but just in case: PLEASE don't try to diagnose the issue or recommend treatments. I've been working with a really wonderful neurologist for years now, and trust me, we've tried it. Yes, peppermint & ginger & butterbur & more, massage & acupuncture & yoga, etc.)

Luckily, my family has gotten largely used to the How Are You question's answer of "It hurts and it sucks and its depressing. So let's talk about you instead! Tell me EVERYTHING you've been up to."

They still slip back sometimes, especially when it's been a while. But they don't seem to resent me ❤️

They want to know why I don't do things that I used to. "Just do XYZ again! You loved it!" Yeah, I know. I didn't stop doing it voluntarily. I stopped because all THIS shit happened.

(THIS is that I get non-stop migraines unless I remain in a tightly controlled environment and up to date on meds.)

It's a depressing answer, and anyone I talk to more than once – family, close friends, my doctors – they've heard it. They know, and they don't really need/want to hear it again. Which is fine! I don't want to talk about it either. But it makes conversation hard.
