Went to the Art Institute recently (after like 5 years of living in Chicago lmao) and WOW no wonder this museum has international acclaim! It was absolutely spectacular and I barely had time to scratch the surface!

Cow Skull with Calico Roses by Georgia O'Keefe. As the name suggests, the painting features a cow skull in the center. The level of detail on the painting is exquisite. There are two pure white roses with white stems and leaves. One is placed at the tip of where the nose would be, and the other is placed at the base of the skull's left horn, as though it were a flower placed in a maiden's hair. The background appears to be several layers of paper with an off white hue and a black line runs down the center behind the skull.

Two photos of Frida Kahlo are framed on either side of an ornate golden fabric sleeve, which originally held the photos when Frida had given them to the artist Walter Pach. The fabric sleeve has beautiful red and blue flowers surrounding a cross.

Nighthawks by Edward Hopper. In this renowned painting, a non-specific diner with large windows on a New York street corner is depicted in exquisite detail, late at night. The diner is open and has 3 patrons. One man sits alone opposite a pair of people (one man and one woman) who are ostensibly a couple. The men wear suits and the woman with red hair wears a red dress. Behind the oddly triangular counter is a longsuffering employee, bent over perhaps to wash a glass or stock the cabinets. The patrons have glum, exhausted looks on their faces, except for the lone patron who is facing away from the viewer. The use of lighting shows the inside of the diner as a bright and warm space, with yellow interior walls contrasting sharply with the barren empty streets outside. Only the light from the diner cuts through the dark of night, bathing the sidewalk immediately around it in artificial light.

Today is #EndangeredSpeciesDay - an important day to learn more about how we can protect endangered species & ensure critical habitats are protected.

Piping Plovers are Near Threatened but considered Endangered in the #GreatLakes region. Progress has been made! Still work to do to keep em safe. ♥️💧

THE PIPING PLOVER

Found only along the Atlantic coast, surrounding the Great Lakes, and on the alkalai flats of the northern Great Plains, the piping plover's population has dwindled due to hunting activity and coastal development that encroached on their habitat.

You can do your part in protecting these endangered birds by respecting dunes and other marked nesting areas of coastal animals, educating others about the threats to shoreline ecosystems, and advocating for the protection and ecologically sound development of beaches and surrounding areas.

Although they're terribly invasive here in the US, I can't help but like them 💖 their ability to mimic sounds they hear is uncanny and they seem to just do it for fun lol
