The corn pit is where you fling your children into the corn.

It's very like a ball pit, but because the corn is so small and dense in comparison it takes more effort to burrow in.

This and apple cider doughnuts are the big things I miss about fall in Wisconsin.

I have a face washcloth and a body washcloth and a loofah for extra scrubbing. I don't want my ass on my face.

Ted. He needs to hear this. Ted, we're all going to explain everything to you from now on.

I say we choose one person who "needs to hear this," and we visit all the things needed to be heard onto them. Kinda like the old village tradition of having a Sin Eater come by.

Please stop saying “I don’t know who needs to hear this.” No one does. This is the internet

If I'm trying to be charitable about this, some people have the mistaken idea that being negative is more honest or meaningful in literary criticism.

But I don't feel very charitable yet.

The @chicago.suntimes.com photographer who risked their personal health and safety to take this photograph is Anthony Vazquez. Please credit photographers and media outlets. In this age of misinformation, a photo with no context could be anything at all.

I don't think she does, but she's told other family members that she likes to use ChatGPT to write emails when she finds the person she's corresponding with tiring.

YUP. It made my skin crawl to read an email with her name on it with that faux cheerful ChatGPT voice describing my own book to me.

Thank you. There's a culture of casual negativity and criticism in my family I've been trying really, really hard to not perpetuate. But I have to remember that recognizing that something is actively malicious is valid criticism.

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

Los Angeles County officials voted on Tuesday to declare a state of emergency over ongoing federal immigration raids.

It's an uncomfortably familiar dynamic. Somebody feels like they have to take me down a peg because I do things I love and we can't have that.

It's just so weird. This isn't how the social contract works. Unless I asked you to read it and give me feedback, I don't need to know any of this!

I don't know if I should just ignore this entirely or address the fact that she used ChatGPT to insult my writing at me for some bizarre reason.

You could just... not read it. Or not tell me about it. Or tell me, but in your own words.

Or you could do the weirdest fucking thing possible.

To add insult to injury, the email is clearly written by ChatGPT. It's weirdly formal for family correspondence and starts out by identifying my book by its full title and giving a brief synopsis of it

She hated my book so much she fed it into an LLM with a list of complaints and asked for a review

I resolved to try to be more positive, because dwelling in negative thoughts wasn't good for me, but I just had something happen that really hurt my feelings

I never ask or expect anyone to read my books, but a family member took it upon herself to read one of mine and then send me a critical email

I can't see what's so unreasonable about expecting people to wear them indoors in public places.

If the cashier at the grocery store can wear hers her entire shift, why can't customers for twenty minutes?

A lot of people do not actually read the book that you wrote, they read the book that they decided you wrote whether or not that's based on the words on the pages or not. There is nothing anyone can do to change this. It can happen to anybody on the wrong day.
