DW Griffith directed BIRTH OF A NATION (1915), a virulently racist film (and neither his first nor his last one of those) that saw racist violence follow wherever it was screened.

police/police unions exert control over the bulk of many municipal budgets, which means they de facto control those municipalities. many mayors, city councils, etc. are largely playing pretend with law enforcement leftovers. the reason police kill with impunity is that its BEEN their state.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.
