Trent Reznor - Nine Inch Nails "With Teeth" album portrait by Rob Sheridan (2005). Photography, digital glitching, scientific imagery, mixed media. Certainly one of my most widely recognized works. The first photo of TR in a Nine Inch Nails album since their 1989 debut was meant to be unexpected and confrontational, drawing influence from Peter Gabriel’s “Melt” album cover. I won’t speak to the portrait’s meaning, as it is as personal to the listener as it is to the artist, an open conversation that evolves depending on one’s interpretation of the album.

For me personally, looking back on it 20 years later as a very different person and artist, it strikes me as confident and empowering in a way that I didn’t fully appreciate at the time. While I felt more at the time that it was about coming apart and struggling to hold on to yourself, I see it now more as a statement of wholeness: The damaged parts of ourselves, the incomplete parts, our flaws and failures and regrets, they all make us who we are, for better and worse, and there’s nothing more confident than a willingness to open up and acknowledge your whole raw fucked-up self. But that’s the beauty of art: It changes with you.

The red line is on a journey that evolves across the album; it is trying to find its place in the world, seeking order and meaning, trying to understand and at times fit in and at times break free, ultimately reaching a point of chaos that could be interpreted as either a positive or a negative.
