Some individuals impact lives like meteorites. You don't need to meet them or know them to be moved by them, to be inspired by them, to be sad when they are gone because they made you happy when they were here.

Also the audiobook is excellent - it’s a full cast and is very much like listening to a play. Great work!

The Cut Throat Trial by @barristersecret.bsky.social is a superb legal thriller. I loved the drip feed approach by using the perspectives of different actors in the trial. It manages to be pacy, gripping, shocking, and yet, truly believable.

I’ve been recommending it to everyone.

A lot more easily than you milk magnesia, I’d wager.

Poor old Glamorgan Sausages.

Well let me know when we’re not allowed to use “coconut milk” anymore.

A text from my mum. The general population appear to be losing their minds

They can’t just say xxx impeded me, can they? So damn childish. And what? Are they out for vengeance now?

Which is why the Govt could try blaming the boats on Farage… but god forbid they say that Brexit isn’t marvellous.

Because it’ll be electorally toxic.

Have you not heard of perfectly normal people saving up to go private because they can’t wait in pain any longer? Or without that diagnosis, etc?

It can’t be done unless the NHS can properly fill the gap.

A petition is not a poll.

That’s why I’d like to see the full proposal following consultation.

This govt have been playing to the anti-migrant crowd for a long time and they’re doing it again. The chosen marketing doesn’t necessarily express all (any of) the “product’s” benefits or intended applications.
rmgriffiths.bsky.social
Aren’t the public pretty supportive of it? Overall?
rmgriffiths.bsky.social
Labour comms in general is amateur hour.
rmgriffiths.bsky.social
Then what on earth are you worried about? Your stasi on the M6 scenario is light years away if it ever does happen. Happy days!
rmgriffiths.bsky.social
It’s not a total mess. There’ll be a consultation and it’ll be properly considered and articulated.

Then we’ll have something definite to talk about and form opinions on.

I fail to see how we’re exceptional and can’t do what many countries do. So I’m approaching it with an open mind.
rmgriffiths.bsky.social
Can we not just wait for the consultation?

Other countries manage it… perhaps we could have even a discussion?

Not just those who changed jobs. I’ve been with my company for nearly two decades and they asked us (relatively recently) for proof of right to work (in a fairly tactless way, causing stress in more than a few people).

I have to say, I’m so impressed with the govt tech on existing ID. It’s quick and easy. Renewing my drivers’ licence was an absolute doddle.

In his newsletter this week ( open.substack.com/pub/jonn/p/w... ), @jonnelledge.bsky.social recalls of an old viral tweet, pictured below.

Which means I can’t now help but riff on how our current government would respond if Reform said something similar. So let’s imagine. 🧵
There’s a long forgotten viral tweet which someone calling themselves @WarrenIsDead posted all the way back in 2016. Here it is now:

American fascist: your going to the camps,
American Liberal, chuckling: ‘you’re’.

He mentioned thalidomide when being asked about it. That’s not smart. It’s dangerous.

I got one to admit today that maybe if they had British kids, they should not be forced to leave.

And that was like pulling teeth. Having a British spouse/partner did not sway them. Ghouls.
rmgriffiths.bsky.social
So they don’t just care about “illegal” immigration then, as their supporters so often say?

Well I suppose by making most of it illegal, they’re at least consistent. Hypocrisy is never a gotcha that works anyway.
rmgriffiths.bsky.social
Imagine them making the positive case for immigration… pipe dreams!
rmgriffiths.bsky.social
Yes - I don’t understand the argument that they can’t. What’s stopping them? The executive is extremely powerful with the backing of parliament.

Retrospectively removing indefinite leave to remain would be immoral and economically damaging. It would tear families apart.
Attacking it as ‘potentially illegal’ is completely beside the point.
Argue with the (awful) idea. Don’t try ’well, actually you can’t do that’.
