Murmur—R.E.M.

If I could put money on this coming in at #1, I think I would.

Surprisingly timeless for something recorded in the mid 1980s, it remains not only their best album, but in my view, the best debut album ever recorded.

1980. Again.

Though Halford indoctrinated me first, Geoff Tate’s superhuman range on “Queen of the Ryche” BLEW. MY. MIND.

Every aspect of his voice is brilliant; he inhabits songs with a conviction a LOT of metal vocalists are incapable of.

Never fails to give me chills.

And THIS monster deliverers another joyous, life-changing shock to the system in 1980 as well — the debut of IRON FUCKING MAIDEN.

As my pal @chuckborowicz.bsky.social can attest, “Transylvania” is a harbinger of greatness — then and to come.

Ronnie James Dio came fully into his own with HOLY DIVER in 1980.

Every last bit of his fearsome, rich vocal range and songwriting ability is on display here — and it all sounds effortless.

Vivian Campbell is a force of nature.

As the kids say, all killer, no filler.

Blizzard of Ozz.

Life-changing.

The world never looked the same after this record (along with a few others that showed up around this time).

There never was a voice like Ozzy’s — and there never will be.

Phil Collins - "Face Value"
1981

This isn't touching my top 5, but it is impressive that he was able to kick out so many albums that were huge hits, one right after another, either solo or Genesis, during this era. Dude was a machine...

Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Welcome to the Pleasuredome.

More than an album, this is a flowing narrative with a 15 minute intro, scetches and an all timer love song.

The Smiths eponymous debut is still a stunning early Manchester album (despite everything now)

Worth it for 'What difference does it make' alone 🚀

Not a contender for my top 5 but the 4 tracks that make up side one are fantastic, with the superb cover of my favourite Prince song being the absolute standout.

Everything you want from a debut album, accomplished yet still with the naivety that adds to the charm. Strangely it reminds me of Orange Juice's debut but in a much more muted style.

Godmoma - "Here"
1981

One off P-Funk side project. A trio of ladies doing the majority of the vocals, with Bootsy stepping in every once in a while. Band features Fred Wesley, Catfish, and a lot of the familiar people. Nothing mindblowing, but a cool album...

Next up for #5debutalbums8084. If you think that “Hey Micky!” Is the only thing here, you’d be wrong. Devo guys show up on three songs! This 1981 debut is pretty fun. #johnsvinyl #nowplaying
