I think the dust might have absorbed some of the battery juice so maybe its presence was a good thing 😁
As it's almost Halloween, time for some horror...

Had a new toy arrive today. The SMART Card from Retroleum.

Has the usual SD card snap 'n tap loading stuff, but also has space for 16 ROM images (including 32K and 64K variants) - all managed from the device itself.

Also has an NMI button for doing NMI things.
The SMART Card is a rather fetching black PCB Easily swap the standard ZX Spectrum ROM out for a custom ROM. All ROMs are managed from the device itself. NMI menu includes options for taking snapshots, tape control and POKEs.

This is pure gold. A who's who guide to the staff at Sinclair Research Limited, from 1984. Photos and details for everyone at the various offices around the UK. There's some great hairstyles and clothing - you have been warned!

Thats cool. Actually I was thinking of using a strip of three header pins and soldering it to that, should I ever put it in an original case.
I am pretty amazed that ULA is working though, I believe this revision is not exactly reliable.

Quick scope check on the memory shows seemingly valid data coming out of all of them, so unfortunately it's not a straight fail (and therefore easy to spot and swap out).
First test, and it boots!

... except that screen came up far too quickly, implying some of the RAM (or an IC connected to it) is not working.

A quick poke and peek above 32768 shows it's an issue with the upper memory. (But then it wouldn't likely boot if the lower RAM was failing)

Finally got around to replacing the regulator and doing the composite mod on this Issue 2 #ZXSpectrum 48K.

Normally, that modern regulator replacement wouldn't fit in the case attached straight up like that, but this is the one from the DK'Tronics keyboard case so not an issue here.

Was rummaging through some of my retro-related photos from last year and found this. I really need to set the IIGS up again 😍

An Apple IIGS running Dungeon Master, on a modern flatsceen monitor, using a FloppyEmu, and an original Apple ADB keyboard and mouse.
Latest retro coding book acquisition, and continuing my building of the Inside Macintosh collection.

This thing is huge - hard to tell the exact page count because of the way its broken down into sections but still, it gives War and Peace a run for its money.
Inside Macintosh: Quicktime, technical book. side view showing book is thicker than a whale omelette.
New arrival. Never owned this at the time, written by R J Mical himself apparently, with Susan Deyl.

Written in a very clear style, should come in very handy.

Yeah, I felt like this back in January.

Pong Wars simulation for Acorn Electron and BBC Micro/Master. This fun little project was inspired by pong-wars.koenvangilst.nl. After coding a prototype in BBC BASIC, I created this 6502 asm version. I hope you enjoy! github.com/0xC0DE6502/p...
Sorry to hear that Roy. My dad has early dementia, it's the main reason I came back to the UK, to help look after him. There are groups in and out of the NHS to support you and your family through it, if it does turn out that way. We've not used them much yet but it's good to know help is available.
