The tariff and trade war from the Trump Administration has led to billions in lost revenue for our farmers. This is a temporary solution to a crisis created by this administration, and farmers nationwide will continue to be affected.

I joined my Democratic colleagues in signing a discharge petition to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies. The ACA tax credits help millions of Americans keep healthcare affordable. Too many families already have to choose between paying for medical bills and putting food on the table.

What a great morning in #Torrington to celebrate the completion of the Railroad Square Train Platform and Promenade

This project marks the completion of Phase I of the downtown revitalization efforts and is a great use of ARPA funds to connect people, places, and opportunities.

The Republican budget is reclassifying professional degrees, which will make student loans less accessible. This change will make it more difficult for students to pursue these programs, enter the workforce, and achieve economic advancement.

What a great showing in the Town of Norfolk for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Firehouse. I was able to support this project with a $500k Community Project Funding grant. This Engine in the Icebox is getting a much needed overhaul

I sent a letter to the Administration urging them to cease any actions that would circumvent Congress and dismantle the Department of Education - specifically, relocating special education programs to HHS.
December 6, 2025 at 8:08 PM
The Trump administration is speeding up efforts to dismantle the Department of Education without Congressional approval. Day to day operations have been shifted to other agencies with no explanation of how they will be implemented and the needs of students met ⬇️

I went before the House Cmte on Vet. Affairs to plead the case for my bipartisan Caring for Survivors Act. My bill provides benefit updates for surviving family members after the service-related death of a loved one.
I will not stop until these survivors get the full benefits their loved ones earned
December 5, 2025 at 6:16 PM
In recognition of World AIDS Day, I was presented with an award from the National Minority AIDS Council for the work of the Congressional HIV/AIDS Caucus. Taking legislative action and supporting research & funding to fight this epidemic remains a top priority.

The reorganization of the Department of Education jeopardizes the authority of the federal government to enforce protections in FERPA & PPRA and truly safeguard student privacy and parental rights.

Teachers do not become teachers to push ideology and indoctrinate children.
They become teachers to educate and support students.
December 4, 2025 at 6:06 PM
The HELP Subcommittee held a hearing and I focused on efforts by the Dept of Labor to rescind the Retirement Security Rule. This would negatively impact employees who have invested their earnings in the hopes of retiring with dignity.

CT is doing the work to make our schools safer places for children to learn. Federal STOP School Violence grants have been used to make more than 150 schools & hundreds of thousands of students safer.

I sent a letter to the Committee on Education & Workforce calling for a full committee hearing to address school shootings.

Preventing school shootings requires a multifaceted approach that includes mental health support, community engagement, gun safety measures, and educational programs.

The Education & Workforce Cmte needs to assert our Article I & jurisdictional authority over this administration. There have been no hearings on the dismantling of the Dept of Education which is happening right before our eyes. Today I called for hearings & shared my priorities.

The Education & Workforce Committee met to advance legislation that weakens employee pay and protections. While the titles may be catchy, the devil is in the details and these bills change the way overtime and tips are paid and once again puts workers last.

I introduced the Restoring Food Security for American Families & Farmers Act of 2025 to repeal SNAP cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill. The shutdown is over, but once the $187B in cuts set in-people will go hungry, our economy will suffer & states will have the impossible task of filling in the gaps

Moving Career Technical Education from the Dept of Education to the Dept of Labor shows a lack of understanding of how CTE provides experience, exploration and career development in students and lacks appreciation for the vital role educators play in this scenario
November 19, 2025 at 11:50 PM
In their ongoing effort to delegitimize the Department of Education, Secretary McMahon and House Republicans are pushing the narrative that the 43 day government shutdown had no effect on education.
The people who actually do the work of educating our children know differently.
