Skelett.

Eines der wohl bekanntesten Gräber auf dem Melathen Friedhof in Köln.
Auf dem Bild ist eine steinerne Statue zu sehen, die den Sensenmann darstellt, eine allegorische Figur des Todes. Hier sind die Details: * Die Figur: Es handelt sich um eine skelettartige Figur, eingehüllt in ein langes, tuchartiges Gewand (eine Kutte oder ein Leichentuch), das von Moos bedeckt ist. Der knöcherne Schädel blickt nach vorne. * Die Attribute: Die Figur hält in der Hand eine lange Sense, das traditionelle Werkzeug des Sensenmanns. In der linken Hand hält sie scheinbar eine Sanduhr oder ein ähnliches Gefäß, das die verrinnende Zeit symbolisiert. * Die Basis: Die Statue steht auf einem Sockel aus grob gehauenen Steinen oder Felsen, die ebenfalls moosbewachsen sind. * Die Umgebung: Die Statue ist von dichtem Grün umgeben, vor allem von hohen Nadelbäumen oder -sträuchern (vermutlich Eiben oder Zypressen), was der Szene eine düstere und friedliche Atmosphäre verleiht. Am Boden sind Herbstlaub, kleine Pflanzen und einige Grablichter zu sehen, was stark darauf hindeutet, dass sich die Statue auf einem Friedhof befindet. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass es sich um eine Grab- oder Friedhofsstatue handelt, die den Tod in seiner ikonischen Form als Sensenmann darstellt.

On the leg of a magnificent 18thC table tomb in Liberton Kirkyard, Edinburgh, is carved the figure of death as a skeleton, standing upon a skull, firing a dart at the soon-to-be-deceased while cutting the cord of a weight dangling over the unlucky person's head!

#31DaysOfGraves day 13 skeleton. Lots to choose from for this theme but settled on this tombstone from St John the Devine, Elmswell, Suffolk. The gravestone is for Matthew Marsh who died in 169[5]. The two skeletons are standing on hour glasses which are on top of cherubs and are holding shovels.
Detail on one edge of the tombstone showing a skeleton carving. The proportions are all wrong with the lower half of the body much smaller than the upper. The skull looks like it it is grinning. The skeleton is holding a spade or shovel in its left hand. A description of the rest of the tombstone is given with the second photograph. A face-on view of the tombstone. On either edge is a standing skeleton holding a spade in its inside hand. Each skeleton is standing on an hourglass which in turn is on the top of the head of a chubby cherub. At the centre-top of the tombstone is a third cherub head with two outstretched wings either side. Below that is a framed panel with the text. The text reads Memento Mori \ Here lyeth the body of \ Mr Matthew \ Marsh who \ dyed ye 18th of \ Aprill 1695 [the last digit is unclear] \ [in Italics] aetatis suae 52 \ [last line unclear] C...

A wide (not quite square) sandstone monument with a slightly curved top. There are three vertical panels. The one in the centre is slightly wider than the two either side and contains a standing skeleton wearing a closed crown (i.e. one with arches) carved in low relief. The side panels are split horizontally into three parts with the centre section being slightly deeper than those at top and bottom. These central parts contain carvings, also in low relief. On the left a tree-like flower consisting of a central stem rising out of arched roots and ending in a rose. Immediately below this are two leaves and below them, on side stems arching downwards, two more rose blooms. On the right a palm(?) tree with nine fronds each side and one at the top. It also grows out of arched roots. On the far right, between the palm trunk and the edge of the panel is a skull. It appears to be impaled (ear-to-ear level) by a pole-arm, the axe head of which can be seen covering the top of the roots and the shaft crossing horizontally over the trunk and out of the left edge of the panel, at the same height as the hands of the skeleton, as if it was holding the weapon.
