My husband grew up visiting New York’s Jones Beach in the summer, a quiet and beautiful oceanside park where one can buy neither peanut butter fudge nor T-shirts advertising that one got crabs at the Seafood Buffet. Once, many years ago, his mother brought several Delawareans to Jones Beach for some church function, and they were aghast at the austerity of the boardwalk there. They didn’t understand why there weren’t any shops, or what they were expected to eat. The story is meant to poke gentle fun at people who can’t envision a boardwalk that isn’t constantly, noisily selling them stuff they don’t need.
I laugh when Sean relays this to me. I don’t admit that I felt the same way about Jones Beach the one time we saw it together, that the silence of nobody selling me nothing felt alienating and sad. Unhawked-to, I was lonely. To me, the beach has always been about sun and surf, yes, but also about this strange form of commerce that only exists in the summer months at state fairs and Renaissance festivals and, of course, the Eastern Shore—places whose tourists mostly come from suburbs or rural towns, hungry for a little urban overwhelm. To Sean, commerce is for the city, and the beach is for getting away from it.

Historic rainfall in New York City affected the AMC Lincoln Square, and the damage was caught on TikTok. Online, patrons of the theater lost their minds.
