He spends his days on his tugboat called 'The Last Drop', escaping the pain of loss and ends up connecting with the angry, injured sea creature that got tangled in his net. Perhaps because Vander set him free, or because he shared his food but the mer wont leave Vander's side whenever he's at sea.
