“Shit human” for my taste in REM albums

Snotty commentary at https://thebestthing.blog
Was listening to the Best Album of 2001 earlier

Half a boring album vs a whole boring album. So I voted Pixies
November 26, 2025 at 5:22 PM
Picking them to lose to NIN finally did not injure me in this case!
So: there’s a clickbox when setting up the tournaments on Challonge for adding a third place match. I have somehow neglected this, I think, several times in a row, despite knowing I need to do it. I apologize to everyone for whom a 3rd place Cure showing would’ve helped them.
Also, is it just me or is the third place match not showing up in Challonge? Or am I just not seeing it? Wouldn't predicting DISINTEGRATION to win third place account for the total score?
November 26, 2025 at 4:43 PM
Bummer it wasn’t by more
DISINTEGRATION defeats PAUL’S BOUTIQUE, 156-133-2.

Pretty nice - and correct - little ass kicking here by The Cure

Told you all I wasn’t crazy for keeping and buying CDs

A vote so bad it prompted the creation of a log file, how to really listen, an alternate 90s music reality, what a pop hook is, youth bowling, hometown pride, a mortifying wedding reception, cocaine bathrooms, mall music, masturbating Tarzan, and bedroom voyeurs

This is RANGE
it is the PENULTIMATE match of @bestalbumbrackets.bsky.social ‘89! It took us almost six months to get here! we have compiled a list of our favorite posts from this tournament, AND I drew (poorly) every Venn diagram that we mentioned during the tournament
Best Album of 1989: Third-Place Clips Show
N: We have arrived at the PENULTIMATE match of Best Album of 1989: the third place battle between the Cure and whoever loses today’s match. Since we won’t know who won the second semifinal prior to…

How this ends won’t affect this really. I went through and ranked every album by performance:

Top overachievers:

The DOC
Screaming Trees
Michael Penn
EPMD
3rd Bass
Wire

Worst underachievers:

Throwing Muses
Elvis Costello
10,000 Maniacs
Lyle Lovett
The Sugarcubes
Laurie Anderson
greetings @bestalbumbrackets.bsky.social friends! we are almost at the end of the 1989 tournament and I am writing to you from my new home on I Am Not Being a Contrarian Asshole Island regarding the Beastie Boys and De La Soul! also I cave to peer pressure and deliver a list of my top albums of 1989
Best Album of 1989 (Semifinal): (2) Beastie Boys – Paul’s Boutique vs. (3) De La Soul – 3 Feet High and Rising
Previous posts: R1: Beastie Boys, in which Jon gets kicked out of a bar and Nanette eats birthday cake R2: Beastie Boys, in which Jon denies Bob Dylan a second time (but ended up not really) and Na…

Beastie fans going to get a rude awakening today

Mine was seeing “Friday I’m In Love” on MTV then I got Staring at the Sea on CD and my favorite tracks were “Let’s Go To Bed,” “Jumping Someone Else’s Train,” and “In Between Days”
my intro to the cure? 14 year old me making out with my 17 year old boyfriend while the top played

yes, the top was my intro to the cure
My intro to the Cure was Standing on a Beach. Most radio didn't play then early, you really had to find them, but a soon as you heard the opening track Killing an Arab, you knew this was something different and special.

Now you @bestalbumbrackets.bsky.social folks should feel bad for what happened 2 rounds ago….

Beltran will make it and, statistically, he should, but he’s boring and I’ve never been totally sold on Jones so I voted only for Utley, who very well may have been the best player in baseball (the NL anyway) for 3-5 years in the mid/late 00s

Never had a gold glove and should’ve gotten a half dozen

Fugazi fucked my bracket up, so screw them

My 3rd grader’s teacher had a discussion about ICE with them today - 19,000 students in the county were absent yesterday - and informed them that any officer would have to go through her to get to any student and I couldn’t be happier or prouder of his school and teacher

Serendipitous timing for this post today

Some heavy Beastie Boys denialism happening today

I think we’re truly seeing here the gap between the top four seeds and the rest of the field

I’ve never gotten over the line on Andruw Jones. Do his voters feel like Jim Edmonds should be in? Strikingly similar trading off some OPS vs fielding all else equal
Our first news this year of a voter reaching the end of their voting eligibility comes with an appeal to current voters. From Twitter/X:

Not a difficult decision for me picking against my bracket again

Wish I’d thought of this for the post but thinking about suburban white kids gobbling up gangsta rap reminded me of student reactions to the Af-Amer student festival at OSU

These same white kids are the ones pulling this bs

You know what millennials/gen z problem is? They don’t have pop stars that sound like Taylor Dayne

I won’t claim perfection - at least on any objective basis - but these are my favorite albums from the year I turned 16. The death knell of Britpop

As far as baseball goes, I think MLB shouldn’t be able to punish players involved in gambling until they scrub all their affiliations with sports betting

But you literally have broadcast networks owned by gambling companies inundating you with betting odds all fucking game
The Athletic polled hundreds of players from across the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL about their opinions surrounding how sports betting impacts players — the responses were haunting.
