So lemme be honest. I know that Miike Takashi has had an impact on the genre of Japanese horror films.

It's just....

Not an impact I enjoy....

Still, I felt he was a necessary inclusion for this month.

●I’m weird about overly violent horror movies - sometimes I find gore needs to be well-used to tell an effective scary story
●If that’s true, Miike Takashi should be considered a master of violence and gore
●His famous film Audition is not one I advise lightly. It’s... a LOT. Very bloody and graphic at times. Too much for puppy.

Dogtober keeps on moving! Today about the twins from FatalFrame II. I've seen this game played, but I'm REALLY excited to play it for myself when the remake comes out next year!

●The protagonists of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly! Mio and Mayu have become icons of Japanese horror
●Fatal Frame II was the best in the series according to many players, and it’s getting a remake in 2026!!
●They even appeared in several Smash Bros. games as trophies and spirits!

Good morning class! Let's talk about Oni! You probably have an idea in your head of what an Oni (demon) looks like. There's a good deal of variation between myths, but generally your head canon is probably right.

●The common vision of an Oni is a large, brutish demon, often with horns and fangs
●They are almost always associated with evil - they are murderous and fierce, but can also be associated with good fortune
●The Kanji used in Oni (鬼) resembles a Chinese type of ghost called a guǐ, but the Chinese version isn’t always evil!

I'm a Death Note [2006] apologist. I thought they were pretty heckin great, and I think they did a lot for the exploration of anime as a film genre. I think I understand why these movies aren't SUPER well loved, but I enjoyed them!

●Even if the Death Note films were heavily meme’d on, of of all the missteps those movies had, Fujiwara Tatsuya’s portrayal of Yagami Light was not one of them
●He changed the landscape of horror forever as Nanahara Shuya in Battle Royale
●If you like his acting, be sure to check out the Kaiji movies, another of his iconic roles!

Today let's learn a little bit about the god of the moon! 🌙

●Tsukiyomi-no-Mikoto isn’t really associated with horror, he’s the god of the moon!
●Japan’s mythology is a little bit unique in that the Sun goddess is a woman, and the moon god is a man (it’s usually the other way around in most cultures!)
●Some scholars of Japanese religion have argued that Tsukiyomi might actually be Susano-o. Others see evidence he’s Amaterasu’s husband!
