Tried to use the idea of pattern spotting to connect to the number bonds to 8 in #MathsToday.
I didn’t anticipate the length of time it took for my student to connect with it. More exposure on pattern spotting and noticing is needed for sure.

S: It’s obvious. If you had a ruler and you enlarged it, the 90° won’t become larger, it will still stay as 90°.
Love it when a student uses a relational example to convince me!

In #MathsToday, student checking if the dot pattern on the die 🎲 does represent the number 6️⃣.

Initially my student looked at the dot pattern and said no, that’s not 6.

After checking it was great to explore other dot patterns within the 6 dots through the hiding strategy. 💪🏽 #Visualisation

A question for #Maths #teachers #TAs in #primary and #secondary #schools
How often do you ask the pupils you work with to match words to operations?

Keen to understand the frequency and the year group at which this is a regular occurrence.

As part of my further studies, I was observing a year 3 student in #MathsToday.

Question: What is the difference between 10 and 6?
Student answer: They are different numbers.

#Language plays a vital role in #maths and so does…

In #MathsToday

Me: Can you convert 4 1/4 into a decimal number?

S: I think so.

4 1/4 = 1.25

Me: Why is it 1.25?

S: Because 1/4 is 25/100 and so the 1 must be the whole.
