Three issues that killed Heroes:
1. They abandoned the "every season has new characters" arc midway through S1, which is why the season finale is so unsatisfying.
2. 2008 Writer's strike killed S2.
3. Badly inconsistent writing of Sylar (bad boy, good boy, mommy's boy, back to bad boy again, etc)
