i've now learned how to de-pin and re-pin wire harnesses. that's definitely a plus.

the fix was relatively easy, and now she will happily rev to redline and limiter with zero desyncs.

eventually i come across a post talking about a similar issue caused by...the + and - sides of the VR sensor being wired backwards. which would throw off the readings from the crank angle. turns out the original builder missed that bit of the manual (it's easy to miss)
for the last...ever...the car's been plagued with an electrical gremlin. the ecu would lose crank angle sync. at first i thought it was that i needed to do a resistor bridge across + and - lines on the VR sensor. no luck there. grounding fixups were also a no go. so forum diving i go...
this is the point of the story where i learn about stub axles
. the good news is that i had a spare axle in the pile of parts that came with the car i got with the car. so in it went and it was finally drivable. but there was one more thing left to do
but something went wrong. my friend and i got in the car for a test drive and then we heard a noise and suddenly no movement. i learned two things at that moment: the current incarnation of the car is "oops all open diffs," and also that there was something very wrong with one of the axles
i picked up new suspension for the car, coz the old one wasn't in the best shape. primitive racing had a set that came well recommended, so those went in. That was pretty smooth all things told
