This system works really well when combined with strong layers.

Here the water and dirt are in layer 0, grass layer 1, trees layer 2 and so on.

They stack similar to how they would in 3d.

If you have to render in a single layer, though, there are better autotile systems like the one in RPGMaker.

I did something cool today by making my code more advanced and and doing it by myself. It is for a tower defense game for a game jam I am in so yeah that's why I haven't been active on here. Here is a move called Sludge Ball in my other passion project of mine that's an RPG monster catching game
