The tradition of Lady Liberty goes back to 1941. Each Lady Liberty has a young sidekick named Liberty Lass. When the original Lady Liberty retired in 1959, her partner became the new Lady Liberty, and a new Liberty Lass was chosen. Each Liberty Lass goes on to replace the retiring Lady Liberty.
