Of the Game Awards controversies right now this one is the most frustrating.

When I attended via Future Class, I was seated next to an award-winning game dev. We were both on our phones. During a break a director came up to him, got in his ear, and said "seat fillers shouldn't be on their phones".

Devs were only allowed a few (I believe two) tickets per nomination before Geoff charged them. Resale tickets were in the hundreds. And we all know what happened to Future Class (if you don’t, read my piece).

While we’re at it; studios that have made redundancies in the last year shouldn’t be allowed to win a Game Award. They can be nominated, sure. But layoffs should be taken into consideration when it comes to actually winning.

I can’t believe that’s considered a hot take but it is.
Text reads: Coatsink potentially laying off half their staff and Splash Damage putting their entire UK staff into a consultancy period (with likely a lot of layoffs to follow) both in the same day is absolutely brutal. Right before Christmas, might I add, when studios take much longer to get back to you for even an interview. The UK games industry has taken yet another huge hit, and it’s devastating to see. We’re NORMALISING this and it has to stop. We see the news and become desensitised to it, we move on from it and that’s that. Not me. I haven’t forgot the 4,000 games industry workers laid off in July, I haven’t forgotten the thousands before that, or the tens of thousands before that. Or what I went through. I’m so, so sorry to the ones going through this at Coatsink and Splash Damage. Remember; if you see someone looking for work, share their posts and recommend them for roles you’ve seen that might suit their skill set. Be part of the village.

EXCLUSIVE: So far it's been unclear what proof Rockstar Games has to justify its firing of 34 union members, who it claims were leaking "confidential information in a public forum".

The amount of people I know who have been laid off from games industry jobs and are deciding to leave games entirely as a result is not only extremely saddening (of course), but also genuinely scary. We have lost legitimately thousands of years of knowledge and experience in the last four years.
